Project : Ushaw College, Durham
Project : Wennington Hall School, Lancashire
Project : University Of Northumbria
Elemore Hall School, a Grade I listed building, near Pittington, was first referred to as a hall in 1587, but the present hall dates from the Georgian era. It is a mid 18th century country house, now in use as a residential special school in County Durham.
Anciently, the estate of Elemore belonged to Finchale Priory, but when Henry VIII sold off monastic lands, it was purchased by the powerful Bertram Anderson, a one-time sheriff and mayor of Newcastle. It was he who built the hall in the shape of an E or a U and parts of this house were later incorporated into the Georgian mansion. In the 1630s, the house passed to a family called Hall family but by the 1700s, belonged to the Baker and Baker-Baker families.
The original house consisted of about 20 rooms that, by 1600, included a hall, kitchen, parlours, workhouse, milk house and butchery. Rebuilt in brick and stone, but keeping the general Eshape, the house was completed in 1753 and encompassed what has been described as "an uncomfortable mixture of Baroque and Palladian architectural styles". A walled garden and a pond were also added to the property. In 1947, the building was sold to Durham County Council and since that time it has served as a secondary school for children with special educational needs due to emotional and behavioural difficulties.
Following on from the extensive stone restoration work carried out at Ushaw College in County Durham, Quadriga were commissioned to carry out remedial works to Elemore Hall School, which consisted of helifix crack stitching, repairs and replacement of the stone "bottles" forming the balconies, re-building sections of damaged external staircases and the removal of loose stonework at high levels together with the consolidation of stonework to the upper walls and pediment. The eroded stone cills to the side extension were also removed and replaced.
Quadriga is a company dedicated to preserving our English heritage and with the team's combined
talent, commitment and experience; the work they produce is of exceptional quality and to the highest standard.
