Langley Castle
Project : St Mary The Virgin Church, Eton Bray
Project : Cornet Castle, Guernsey
The Grade 1 listed Langley Castle, at Langley-on-Tyne in Northumberland Is a fine example of the mediaeval fortified houses built during the 14th century, which now operates as a luxury hotel. Historic differential movement had resulted in some vertical cracking of the outer masonry. To sympathetically stabilise the structure and prevent the cracks worsening, concealed HeliBar reinforcing rods from Helifix were installed and the structure repointed with lime mortar.
To maintain the castle's appearance, stainless steel HeliBars were chosen to secure the cracked masonry because they are fully concealed, providing a secure and reliable repair and stress-free repair by accommodating normal structural movement. So as not to damage the stonework and because the bed joints were irregular, the Helical bar reinforcement repair technique was chosen. Slots had to be cut in the mortar between the sandstone blocks by hand, then bonded the HeliBars, which could be manipulated to fit into the uneven slots across the cracks. Mortar joints were raked using purpose made hand tools to avoid unnecessary disturbance of the masonry.
Careful repointing with historic lime mortar completed the works to Leave Langley Castle secure and visibly unaltered.
Some new stone was indented and a new mullion fitted.
