Project : Aversham & Miller Park, Preston
CLIENT : The Governors of Sedburgh School
SUPERVISOR : Buttress Fuller Alsop Williams
Contract : Restoration of the War Memorial Cloisters
Scope of Works :
• Waterproofing works and stone repairs to the large coping stones of the parapet wall which form the perimeter of the monument.
• Carefully removed the coping stones on the top level of the parapet walls, which were set aside for reuse.
• Mass excavation to the rear of the Cloister wall took place to facilitate the installation of a new land drainage system and waterproof membrane.
• All stonework was lightly washed down and scrubbed with a biocide to remove algae growth and the parapet wall was then rebuilt using hydraulic lime mortar taking care to maintain the fine joints and over hang details.
• Internally, the memorial plaques were refurbished by removing the residual dampness from the stone at room temperature to avoid cracking; then the letters were recarved and inlaid with black ink.
• The internal flagstones were redressed, turned and rebedded to ensure the correct line and level was maintained.
• The front façade was cleaned, repointed and all vegetation growth was removed and new handrails were installed to the parapet wall, stairwell and roof of the cloisters.
