Many 19th and 20th century buildings incorporated steel frames which are liable to corrosion. Now, we find many of these buildings in poor condition. Conventional treatments can be highly invasive, involving opening up large areas to expose and treat the affected components.
Cathodic protection offers an alternative approach to the treatment of rusting iron and steelwork buried within buildings and structures.
The very latest advances in technology allows us to connect parts of or a whole building to a cathodic protection system. This effectively turns the steel/iron frame into a galvanic electrical cell, turning the frame into a cathode, while another metal is connected as the anode.
The second metal which is introduced has a more active voltage and is therefore more likely to corrode; it is thus sacrificed to protect the steel.
