Stone Repair

Quadriga offers systems of stone repair which sympathetically conserve and restore masonry and stone, preventing further deterioration, either structurally or aesthetically.

Stone repair options are broadly the same as those used for other types of masonry and include complete renewal, insitu surface restoration, or consolidation.

Causes of stone masonry failure are most commonly; incompatible materials placed beside one another, inadequate weathering and poor quality repairs. The use of hand mortars in re-pointing is a common cause for stone deterioration.

External stonework often requires cleaning in order to adequately identify concealed defects and the extent of the stone repair needed.  Once diagnosed various methods can be adopted depending upon the type of stone masonry and the extent of the decay.

INDENTING NEW MASONRY

New pieces of masonry can be indented into an existing structure to replace defective areas of stonework.

INSITU RESTORATION USING REINFORCED REPAIR MORTARS

A defective area of masonry can be cut out and repaired using restoration mortar. The area of stone repair is dampened and stainless steel dowels are fixed into the host area of stone repair if required, before the area is restored forward with mortar to it's original line and profile.

PINNING AND GROUT INJECTION

Areas of unstable or loose stonework can be consolidated using grouting or pinning techniques. Grout is pumped into the unstable masonry structure to bind the masonry together while producing what is in effect an invisible repair. Pinning can be used to fix loose pieces of masonry to the main structure and improve the stability of the substrate. Stainless steel dowels are drilled into the stonework and fixed in place with epoxy resign.

Materials with which we commonly work include:

Natural stone
- When restoring facades of natural stone it is preferable to replace defective sections with new stonework at match existing, ideally from the original quarry or location.Reconstituted stone
- For heavily ornamental stone or where constraints prevent the use of natural materials, reconstituted stone made from graded stone dust, silica sands, cement and bonding agents provides an alternative.

Terracotta & Faience
- A highly decorative, fire glazed and kiln dried product requiring skilled craftmanship to manufacture. Working closely with one of the only remaining manufacturers in the UK, Quadriga offers specialist replacement, new build and in-situ stone repair services.

Stucco & Render - Replacement of stucco and render requires the specialist use of polymer-modified mortars or lime-based render systems.

Brickwork
- Failed brickwork may either be replaced by indenting new bricks or restored in-situ by similar techniques as those used in stone repair.

Marble & Terrazzo
 - Specialist chemicals are used to degrease and clean marble and terrazzo to remove the build up of dirt deposits prior to repair and re-polishing.
