Over the years, many have been altered beyond recognition as businesses changed hands, but every now and then you get the opportunity to help put a little bit of that history back.
That’s exactly what we’re doing in Holyhead. We’re carrying out restoration works to a number of the original shopfronts, while elsewhere we’re installing new timber shopfronts based on the surviving historic designs, helping to reinstate the original character of the street. The new shopfronts at the Market Buildings, 18 Stanley Street and 2 Boston Street have all been designed to complement the surviving Victorian examples and create a much more cohesive streetscape.
It’s one of those projects where the individual buildings look great, but it’s when you step back and look at the whole street that you really appreciate the difference.

Timber Decay

Timber decay is one of the most common defects encountered within historic and listed buildings.
On a recent heritage restoration project in Chester, our team carried out specialist repairs to a series of decayed timber corner posts supporting a projecting upper storey. Years of weather exposure had resulted in significant deterioration to the corner posts and sections of the supporting wall plate beneath.
Following detailed surveys and consultation with the structural engineer, a repair strategy was developed that balanced structural requirements with conservation principles. The objective was not simply to replace decayed timber, but to preserve the character and detailing of the historic structure whilst providing a robust long-term solution.
The works involved:
• Detailed investigation and assessment of the existing timber structure
• Localised replacement of deteriorated wall plate sections in European oak (to match the existing species of timber)
• Careful removal of decayed corner posts, including relevant temporary works design and propping (approved by structural engineer)
• Manufacture of replacement timber corner posts off-site to accurately replicate the original profiles and detailing
• Installation and integration of the new timber elements within the retained historic fabric
• Decoration and finishing to restore the appearance of the timber-framed elevation
The photographs show the process from initial survey and investigation through to manufacture, installation and completion.
Projects such as this demonstrate why specialist timber restoration requires far more than simple replacement. Understanding the causes of timber decay, assessing structural performance and delivering conservation-led repairs are all essential to preserving historic buildings for future generations.
