Cathodic Protection

Many 19th and 20th century buildings incorporate steel frames which are liable to corrosion and unfortunately we now find many of these buildings in poor condition.  Conventional treatments can be invasive, involving opening up large areas to expose and treat the affected components.  Cathodic protection offers an alternative approach to treating rusting iron and steelwork buried within buildings and structures.

Cathodic protection systems work by applying a direct electrical current to the metal structure, creating a protective environment that reduces and prevents corrosion through the introduction of a metal with a more active voltage which is sacrificial to the steel.

The Latest Advances in Technology

The very latest advances in technology allows us to connect parts of or a whole building to a cathodic protection system. This effectively turns the steel/iron frame into a galvanic electrical cell, turning the frame into a cathode, while another metal is connected as the anode.

The second metal which is introduced has a more active voltage and is therefore more likely to corrode; it is thus sacrificed to protect the steel.
